Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever

Hebrews 13:8 (NIV)

Over a Century of Faith, Fellowship, and Community

For more than 120 years, Fairview Baptist Church has been a place of Christian worship and fellowship in the heart of Vancouver. Throughout that time, our congregation has experienced growth, change, and its fair share of challenges. Yet through it all, Fairview has remained a community brought together by a shared faith in Jesus Christ and a desire to serve God and our neighbours.

Our history is not simply the story of the buildings we have occupied, but of the people who have gathered within them. Generations of worshippers have helped shape the life of our church, and their faith, dedication, and service continue to be reflected in the congregation we are today.

Our Beginnings: 1905–1922

The story of Fairview Baptist Church begins on August 5, 1905, when 21 members of First Baptist Church gathered for worship in a newly constructed building at 2008 West 4th Avenue.

As Vancouver grew and its neighbourhoods developed, so too did the Baptist community. In the spring of 1922, four Baptist churches joined together to form a new congregation: Fairview Baptist Church.

The First Home

The newly united congregation established its home in a red-brick church building on West 12th Avenue, where the first service was held on March 8, 1922.

These early years laid the foundation for a congregation that would continue to worship, grow, and serve the Fairview neighbourhood for generations to come.

A New Place For Worship: 1949–1951

As the congregation continued to grow, plans were made to expand the church on West 12th Avenue. However, when the City of Vancouver widened the street, those plans could no longer proceed.

Rather than abandon the idea of a larger church, the congregation began looking for a new home.

In 1949, Fairview purchased a property at the corner of Pine Street and West 16th Avenue, the site where our church stands today. The first sod was turned in April of that year, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter.

Construction, however, did not proceed quite as expected. Complications involving the Restriction Act brought the project to a halt, delaying the completion of the new sanctuary.

During this time, Fairview joined Chalmers United Church for worship, holding combined services for 17 months while awaiting the completion of the building.

At last, on March 18, 1951, the congregation gathered for worship in its new sanctuary. Two days later, on March 20, the church held its dedication service.

The completed sanctuary, with its sweeping wooden arches and beautiful Good Shepherd stained-glass window, provided a new home for the congregation. These architectural features remain an important part of Fairview today, welcoming worshippers into the same space that has served our church for more than seven decades.

Growing with the Congregation: 1967

As the years passed, Fairview continued to grow, and with that growth came the need for additional space.

An expansion was constructed alongside the sanctuary to provide dedicated rooms for Sunday School, Christian education, and a church lounge. The new building was officially dedicated on June 4, 1967.

These additions provided opportunities for people of different ages to gather, learn, and build relationships beyond Sunday worship. Over time, some of the classrooms were adapted to accommodate church and ministerial offices as the needs of the congregation changed.

The expansion reflected an important part of Fairview’s life: the understanding that a church is not only a place to worship, but also a place to learn, share fellowship, and care for one another.

Celebrating 100 Years: 2005

In 2005, Fairview Baptist Church celebrated its 100th anniversary, marking a century of Christian worship and service in Vancouver.

It was an opportunity to reflect on the generations of people who had helped shape the congregation, the challenges they had overcome, and the many ways in which the church had grown and changed.

During the anniversary celebrations, the congregation revisited its mission and motto: “Gathered and sent by Christ to build and to make known the reign of God: to love God, neighbour and self.”

These words expressed the congregation’s desire to be a community grounded in Christ, strengthened through fellowship, and called to share God’s love beyond the walls of the church.

Fairview Today

Much has changed since those first 21 worshippers gathered in 1905. Vancouver has grown into a very different city, the Fairview neighbourhood has continued to evolve, and generations have come and gone.

Yet Fairview Baptist Church continues to gather in the sanctuary that was dedicated in 1951.

Today, we remain a congregation committed to worshipping God, growing in our understanding of Scripture, sharing in Christian fellowship, and supporting one another through the joys and challenges of life.

We are grateful for the people who came before us, whose faith and dedication helped build the church we know today. Their contributions remind us that Fairview has always been more than a building. It is a community of people who have sought to follow Jesus Christ together.

As we look toward the future, we hope to continue that tradition, welcoming new generations, nurturing Christian faith, and sharing God’s love with the wider community.

Our history is still being written, and we invite you to be part of it.
